Do you have to start boxing at the lightweight division?

I weight around 185. I want to start boxing. Im 17.

Do you have to weight a certain amount to be in the ameteurs?

In boxing 185 is heavyweight.

so does that mean ill be an ameteur heavyweight boxer?

Is there even such a thing%26quot;?

and does that mean I will have to enter the pro%26#039;s as a heavyweight boxer?

please answer all the questions not just one.

thank you in advance. =]|||Yeah, 185 is not heavyweight and you fight at whatever weight class your at basically.

No you don%26#039;t have to weight a certain amount to be in the amateurs.

If you weigh 185 once you get in the gym and work you%26#039;ll guranteed lose weight and probably get to at least 178 which is light heavyweight.

Yes that means you%26#039;ll be an amateur light heavyweight.

In the amateurs heavyweight is 201 and super heavy is over 201.

And no that does not mean you will HAVE to enter the pro%26#039;s as a light heavy or heavy, when you sign your first professional contract whatever weight you sign at is what you fight at.

In the pro%26#039;s over 189 is heavyweight.|||you start in your respective weight class, so yes you would be an amateur heavyweight boxer|||The previous answer is incorrect. Current amateur weight limits are:

Weight (up to) IBA

91+ kg (200+ lb) Super heavyweight

91 kg (200 lb) Heavyweight

81 kg (178 lb) Light heavyweight

75 kg (165 lb) Middleweight

This is the standard for the 2008 summer Olympics. With proper and intense training you may be able to compete at 178 if you can meet the weight. A decent trainer and a dedicated training regiment may help make that weight. if you should gain weight during training, don%26#039;t be intimidated by going in at 192-95lbs against a 200lb opponent.

Your sparring sessions and training should give you enough confidence to compete at the weight your trainer starts you at.|||First of all, 185 is not heavyweight, it%26#039;s Cruiserweight. They have all the weight classes in the amateurs too, so you don%26#039;t have to start at any particualr weight. You think Tyson and Lewis started as Lightweights? So at your weight you will be a Cruiserweight both at the amateur and pro levels, unless you cut or bulk up.
