What is the point of the speed bag in boxing?

i dont exactly understand why people train with it. A person who uses it may become good at punching the speed bag and learn to develop a quick rhythm. but in a boxing match you wouldnt normally punch your opponent the same way as you would punch the speed bag. so what is the point.|||The speed bag besides working on your shoulders, traps, and biceps teaches u hand speed and one of the most important things in boxing, Good hand -eye coordination. When a person starts of with it u go slowly and build a rythem, left knuckles then back of hand, right knuckles then back of hand while moving your feet with the punches. As one gets better with it and the speed u punch with increases u learn to move around as your punching and hook off the jab, throw straight rights and time your punches of the bag. When u get real good at it u move on to what is called a %26#039;%26#039;peanut%26#039;%26#039; bag. It is a much smaller version of a regular sized speed bag and MUCH harder to hit. Hand-eye coordination is very important and the speedbag teaches u it as well as gives u a very good upper body workout.|||Thank You. Report Abuse
|||the speed bag is your speed and eye hand coordination and the double end bag but a speed bag is good you should try it out see you how long you can go for|||I asked myself the same question many years ago when I started:)Obviously as you note it is not for punching technique.

Its actual purpose is its probably the closest thing boxing has to meditation technique. It is a concentration exercise, builds hand-eye coordination and rhythm, some conditioning benefit to the shoulders too.

I consider it 4 parts useful, and 6 parts looks cool, which accounts for its traditional popularity more than anything :)|||it develops hand-eye coordination and it makes you quicker.|||because the speed bag is training some of your muscles to be better at moving quickly. you dont%26#039; need to be using them exactly like you do for the speed bag.

your question is kind of like asking why they skip rope when there%26#039;s no skipping in a boxing fight, or why they lift weights if there%26#039;s no weightlifting in a boxing fight.|||the person above gave u a %26quot; well its a speed bag so it should be meant to build speed%26quot; answer which is completly wrong. The bag simply strenghthens the sholders which u can tell if u use it correctly
