Ok i%26#039;m a 16 year old boy and i am joining boxing. I have to wear a cup and am wondering if they make cups that fit you better than the usual uncomfortable cups. What is your opinion on skill level of mma and ufc vs boxing?

which do you guys think is harder and takes more talent and skill. For example do you think a boxer could make it in mma or an mma fighter could make it in boxing.|||Neither is harder than the other as it comes to skill. Both take strength agility stamina hand eye coordination etc. I agree with what the guy above me said as far as crossovers favoring boxers opposed to mixed martial artists, since they have a distinctive advantage when it comes to hand skills. Most mma fighters train in boxing but dont really focus on standing inside and trading blows. If a boxer were to try doing that in the UFC he would be taken to the mat instantaneously and his aforementioned superior hand skills wouldnt mean dick. For a boxer to become competitive all he%26#039;d really have to master is takedown defense, in order to be successful. For a mma fighter to switch to boxing he%26#039;d basically have to go against his instincts of slamming his opponent to the canvas everytime his opponent went in to clinch(which happens alot in boxing). I%26#039;m no cage fighter but I train BJJ and as soon as a person gets into arms length I start thinking, pummel..get the underhook..and so on and so forth...|||for talent and skill check this out

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RGVloJzY...|||there is no difference in actual skill level. They are all world class athletes and the best at their game.

As to crossovers it favours the boxer.

A top MMA guy will not have the specialised genetics for punching power, reflexes or chin to survive even at middle rank boxing levels. This will not change with training either.

With the current UFC rukles a boxer though can learn some basic wrestling defence lessons after a couple of years, enough to defend

even high level grapplers and therefore make a fight out of it.

This is not to say boxers are better or more adaptable than MMA guys. It is more to do with the new UFC rules that are promoting stand ups and fighting against the fence, which favour striking styles.

If it was the early UFC rules with no time limits on the ground, the best grappler would still be unstoppable-he gets the first takedown and never lets the other guy get up again.|||I think the skill level is about the same especially on the championship level but as far as talent it is hard to quantify because I think each sport has enough differences to favor certain talents over another. So it would be hard to say a boxer could go and do this or that and vice versa because if you are exellent in one of them would not mean anything as far as the other is concerned. I think MMA favors more brute strength where as boxing favors more speed and agility. Boxing is a martial art form and I think it is a great sport but to judge which fighting style is better I would have to say MMA just because you have access to all these different ways to disable an opponent instead of just hitting them with your fist. I think if you look across the world all men are the same, if they train they can become dangerous some more so then others so I consider mma guys and boxing guys to be the same, just fighters. I think boxing my favor a taller guy with reach but those guys get beat up a lot in mma because they are easier to take down. It takes years to learn these submission sequences just like it takes years for you to be a great boxer.|||There are MMA fighters who cross over to boxing, and compete in the higher echelon of the sport. I think that Boxers wouldn%26#039;t have an answer for kick or take-downs as they are not a pair of their sport. MMA fighters do have knock out power and accuracy as many a UFC fights have proved.

What is the price going to be for the Nintendo Wii on boxing day?

I am going to get a Nintendo Wii this boxing day for myself and was wondering what the price is going to be? Also if the price is going to go up or down. I am going to get it from a Canadian Best Buy store or from a Canadian Future Shop store. And I live in Ontario so I am in the Grater Toronto Area (GTA). I need the answer AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Thank You in advance!|||Wii price will only fall (or stay same with better bundles)|||I think the price will stay the same and it will probably be around $50.

Do you have to remove the bony part of your nose in boxing?

My friend told me that it is a requirement for professional boxing in the U.S., is this true?|||you mean the cartilage, dont you a lot of boxers mainly latin/white

have more cartilage then black fighters thats why alot of us have flatned looks to our faces..Most black people do not have the same type of cartilage in their noses it is more plyable then wht folks and NO you dont get it removed in the operation table you get it flatened by too many shots to the face|||No!!! I

If you are going to have any bony part removed from your body it had better be in an Operating Room and not the boxing ring.|||Only if you%26#039;re Tex Cobb.|||not true|||It%26#039;s true. That%26#039;s why Michael Jackson had his nose removed.|||no|||Not true. Boxing is now an international sport as well. So it can be dictated by international rules. Who are some of the most personable, fun, and charismatic fighters in boxing history?

Of course I know Ali was. Would like some interesting stories or facts about some characters of boxing. I appreciate your input.|||There are many fighters that give us reason to watch boxing. There were Sugar Ray Leonard, Ray Robinson, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, and many more. In recent history, there were Roy Jones Jr., Felix Trinidad, Arturo Gatti, and Erik Morales. Nowadays, there%26#039;s Pacman, Arce, Floyd, and Oscar.

They all have colorful personalities and an exciting persona. They are fun inside the ring and give us excitement.|||Rocky Balboa...|||Chris Eubank was one of boxings most charismatic characters a true excentric to the point of being slightly weird. You don%26#039;t see too many people riding a harley davison whilst wearing a suit complete with waistcoat, pocket watch, monacle etc. He was more known for his lavish ring entrances rather than his fights and despite his arrogant act was quite a respectful and honest fighter, he never ranked himself as the best fighter in his weight class publicly saying both Micheal Nunn and Roy Jones Jr would most probably beat him if they ever met. He was one of those fighter that you love or hate but was always good to watch. Also in answer to statments above Jorge Paez was the orginal rope flip bloke another charismatic fighter nice shorts etc. Prince Naseem was charismatic to an extent but wasent original his whole image seemed to be copied from other fighters.|||ray robinson, ali, ray leonard, prince naseem, jorge peaz, pazmanian devil, hecytor camacho, little red lopez, and pernell whitaker.|||I%26#039;ve never seen anything better than Jorge %26quot;El maromero%26quot; Paez, good fighter %26amp; good show.|||Foreman was and is one of the most entertaining personalities. He makes fun of himself alot saying Ali did really rope a dope. Foreman may joke and poke fun at himself but he was a great puncher and good boxer.|||Prince Naseem Hamed was the backflipping boxer. He disappeared from boxing after his loss to Marco Antonio Barrera 5 or 6 years ago. He got in some trouble with the law and was jailed for awhile, but I believe he is trying to make a comeback. Hopefully so, it was fun watching his antics and boxing style. Even when losing to Barrera, he was still dancing and showboating.|||I had the good fortune to be with a good friend of mine from LA two easters ago and he and one of his friends was entertaining Winky Wright his wife and their two kids...a group of 14 of us hung out all day long at Disneyland ...the park was so packed (they announced attendance at over 54k later that day and had to close it to incoming...we got our run of the whole place, in the vip line to the rides on the left of the regular ropes) he was so down to earth and cool, just like any homie you hang out with any day...and he had told me...%26#039;this fight with Trinidad is the best opportunity for me and my family%26#039; after which he beat Felix in a unanimous decision...|||Vinny Pazienza, Hector %26quot;Macho%26quot; Camacho, Jake La Motta, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Jorge Paez used to do a flip off the ring corner, he was originally a circus clown. Rocky Graziano, George Foreman with his eating habits. Prince Naseem Hamed, Paul Malignaggi another flashy fighter. Roy Jones Jr with his ring entrances and talking to the camera while he was fighting.|||1.Fernando %26quot;El Feroz%26quot; Vargas.

3.Mike Tyson - I was small when I watched his fights but, man k.o. other boxers in one rund during his prime.

What do you think of China's future in the sport of boxing?

China is pumping money into athletic programs and is aggressively making an effort to get into mainstream sports like boxing. The Chinese have always been great fighters but have historically avoided participating in mainstream sports, presumably on purpose, how do you think they%26#039;ll do when they face some good American boxers, serious answers only.|||Chinese military is very powerful, not just by size, but the individual as well.

If china boxes with somebody in same weight class, they will do quite well. Chinese athletes have several victories over americans in sanshou tournaments. why wouldn%26#039;t they be able to do the same, exclusively in boxing?|||Chinese boxers can%26#039;t have any future in the sports like boxing because of one reason. They need to have a model that will out stand in boxing. Just like Manny Pacquiao, he serves as a model for the Filipino boxers. Because of pacquiao, Las Vegas

has opened a a door for filipino boxers.|||It%26#039;s possible, but only if some Chinese athletes really work on gaining the necessary knowledge and skills required for boxing. But as a country involved in boxing? Only time will tell.|||the chinees are great in martial arts but are real short and kinda small if they got in the ring with Americans they would halv to be kareyd out on a strecher|||As a generalization I don%26#039;t think they will have the genuine size needed.|||well know they are crazy at two sports karate and boxing. chineese are born with speed and made for physical sport.

Are you supposed to dress nice when you go at a boxing match?

when i watch boxing i usally seems like eveyone is dress is nice. you dress better that you would at any other sporting event.|||You can dress either way. Ive been to boxing matches in atlantic city and madison square garden. Ive seen people dressed both ways. Women tend to dress more. Ive seen a lot of women in dresses and high heels. Also the more expensive seats drressed more than the cheaper seats.|||It depends, if you are the ring girl- the less the better.|||It don%26#039;t matter|||dress casual but comfortable.nice jeans and shirt.you don%26#039;t want to wear your nice stuff...just when some action takes place that%26#039;s when someone will spill a bud lite on your expensive favorite shirt or drop ketchup on your favorite slacks, nope just dress comfortable.|||you can dress any way you want. when i go i dress casual because i get into the fights..don%26#039;t want to wear a dress when I%26#039;m jumping up and down...dress they way you feel.|||You%26#039;re free to dress any way you like at a boxing show--assuming you live in a democratic nation.

How effective is the boxing move, the dempsey roll?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dempsey_rol...

In the anime Hajime no Ippo (a boxing anime) this is the main character%26#039;s signature move, and he constantly tries to improve on it%26#039;s weaknesses, like breaking his rhythm and performing his moves from different angles (hooks and uppercuts)|||The move IS REAL and it IS REALLY EFFECTIVE. Jack Dempsey and Mike Tyson both used it, and they both reigned over the heavyweights.

The anime shows an exaggerated version of the move; but if powerful hooks like that really did land, it would be just as effective as it shows. It is however, by no means, unstoppable.

The person who said they saw kids on youtube doing it is obviously ignorant to the world of real boxing...|||I%26#039;m familiar with the tactic, and I see kids on youtube mimicking it. They keep their feet together and then bob and flail, weave and flail. There%26#039;s no way that could work unless it%26#039;s part of some choreographed fight scene. The point to the Dempsey roll as it%26#039;s called, is to turn a defensive move fluidly into an offensive move. But it%26#039;s a reactive method of attack, not simply a predetermined attack. Duck and weave, move your feet into attack position, and fire either an upper or hook, if your opponent counters, duck and weave, move your feet and repeat. If your opponent doesn%26#039;t counter, you don%26#039;t duck, you fire off another punch with your other hand. But it%26#039;s vitally important to have tremendous footwork. What I%26#039;ve seen is people doing the move and keeping their feet firmly rooted as if they were set in concrete. That%26#039;s a good way to get obliterated.

Are there any notorious Scottish or Irish boxing styles?

Also can someone tell me what degree of notoriety that the two(Ireland/Scotland) have in boxing. Or is it just that a lot of boxers flourished from that region back in the day making the sport more popular, embracing the sport as part of their heritage. There was a Tom Cruise film where he portrayed an Irish boxer and I just wondered about how much influence there was/is that the Irish and Scotch have in the history of boxing.|||Watch Jack Dempsey, Mick Ward, Gerry Cooney, James J Braddock, and Gene Tunney for Irish styles. The only good Scottish boxer I know was Ken Buchanan who fought Roberto Duran.

How can some joe-schmo like me get into boxing?

I%26#039;m 23 and in the Navy, but no one is really into boxing where I%26#039;m stationed. Back home, people are into it, and I get out in a year, so I figure I have time to train before I go home for good, and get too old.

I was into Tae Kwon Do back in my early to mid teens, but I%26#039;ve gotten so rusty at it, the only thing I%26#039;ve retained is my hand-eye coordination (thanks to boot camp), and I%26#039;m still light on my feet (thanks to soccer), so boxing is the only thing I think I%26#039;d fit into as far as full contact sports. But my endurance is better than it was during karate school... I%26#039;m able to run 3 miles with no problem nowadays.

As far as my size, I%26#039;m 6 feet even, and just under 200 lbs, so I%26#039;d be on the heavy side of cruiserweight, which I guess is a good thing.

Has there ever been a win/lose prize money in pro boxing in the modern era?

I thinking boxing is loosing more ground to the UFC due to the poor performances of recent %26quot;title bouts%26quot;. Do you think a winner and loser purse would encourage better entertaining fights? The guaranteed money isn%26#039;t helping at all.|||That has been suggested, but I honestly don%26#039;t think it%26#039;s the biggest problem with boxing.

The real problem is there are three major associations fighting each other for the title of %26quot;legitimate%26quot; boxing association. This was born out of greed, of course, and there are now three champions (Four if you count the WBO, more if you start counting a whole bunch of other alphabet soup organizations). Champions are generally reluctant to face one another. Because they can lose big. Staying champion becomes their sure way to keep earning those big purses. So championship bouts have this tendency to be between any one of those champions, and a talented boxer that is just below championship material, so that although he%26#039;s a good athlete, we know he doesn%26#039;t really stand much of a chance.

I think that is the true problem - too many mismatches and not enough will to put an end to the situation. Up till about 10 years ago, I used to follow boxing, but I%26#039;ve mostly lost interest, and this is one of the main reasons.

I had a amateur boxing match today, and i clearly won, but the other kid got the majority decision. 2 months ago i fought the same kid, i was 2 rounds up, and he got the match by 2 points.

I personally believe the judges are starting to give the decision to the boxer they want to win. What are the liabilities and issues I would have when hosting a boxing event?

I am considering starting a boxing group in my area with some friends. I was curious as to all the issues I will need to take care of in terms of liabilities and injury, etc. I think a boxing event would be tons of fun but need to get some outside input.|||Web P ~

In my opinion, you need to contact USA Boxing, that is the amateur boxing governing body in the United States. They will send you a information packet out with applications for Coaches and Fighters. There is insurance available through this organization.

Once you (Gym) are a member you will receive a monthly news letter and your Gym gets put on a National registry of Boxing Gyms other clubs in your area will contact you when they have fights upcoming.

There is much more involved if you plan on putting on a Boxing show. You must notify the area President of USA Boxing about your upcoming event. You must secure at least three licensed Judges, a Doctor for physicals and to be present at ringside in the case one is needed and a Referee that is licensed through USA Boxing. There is also the question of a Ring if you own one or have to rent one. The ring must have the proper padding or the can terminate your application for the fight. It must have four (4) rope dividers (to keep the ropes from seperating, so a fighter doesn%26#039;t fall out of the ring while leaning on the ropes) If you ring is elevated you must have the proper stairs for each fighter to enter the ring.

There are several other issue involved in this process, but when you apply for your USA Boxing application they will send you all information regarding putting on a show.

Personal note: You might want to put up signs around your Gym stating that, Boxing is a Dangerous Sport, serious injury and DEATH can happen while doing this sport. You must consult with your Doctor before you start to Box to see if you are healthy enough for this type of Sport.

Good luck Web P.

How do boxing rankings work?

In boxing you can have one fighter who is ranked differently by different governing bodies.

Do they have a system or is it subjective?|||It works?

It is supposed to be on a points system (even though they dont really have to go by the points.?) It has a lot to do with promoters getting these bodies to rank their fighters.

Is playing boxing on Wii Sports a good way to exercise?

When I play I stand up. After about 20 minutes, my heart rate has gone up, and I am breaking a sweat. Is it a good way for me to get exercise?

I am 180 pounds. About how many calories can I burn in 20 minutes of Wii Boxing?|||I don%26#039;t think so because that is only moving your arms and also there are ways to play the boxing on the Wii without having to actually exercise. Also, moving your arms and sweating isn%26#039;t that good of an excercise. You have to include your whole body. If you want to use Wii as a way to exercises, you could try to use the Wii Fit. It was made specifically for losing weight and exercising. It moniters your weight and lets you work out different parts of your body. There are yoga poses, strength excercises, and games. The games include this sort of stepping on and off the board at different patterns, running, and other sorts of things. You could excercise for 30 min it would help a lot. f you really don%26#039;t want to use this, you can also jog, run on a treadmill, swim (like going back and forth as fast as you can), play sports, etc. If you just want to lose weight, try eating healthy and combining excercises. By eating healthy, i mean no fast food, no chocolate, no other sweets, no junk food like chips. You should eat fish and meat and not too much rice. You have to eat more meat or fish or whatever your eating than rice. Also, this means no sodas, or energy drinks. Energy drinks are packed full of sugar which makes you active for a short time then you CRASH!! Also, eat only a little bit several times a day. If you get hungry, try eating a banana or yogurt to help you. Good luck! Hope this helps.

How do I choose boxing gloves?

I just joined a fitness club that has boxing classes. I do want to join but I need my own boxing gloves. I found some that I want to buy just that they come in 3 different sizes 12oz, 14oz and 16oz. How do I choose? I am 5%26#039;7 @155lbs if that helps. Im oviously a bigginer but I do want to work my self up to sparing with other boxers. Im just too much of a rookie to go up to the pros and ask.|||Try out each size and see which feels best, which is not too heavy that you can move quickly, but heavy enough that when you strike, it will be felt. You should really just ask the coach or instructor, that would be the best way. I work out a lot, and I see guys come into the gym and pretend they know what they are doing, but just end up screwing around on the machines and such. Its much better to look like an amaetur than an idiot; don%26#039;t be ashamed you don%26#039;t know, if you are just starting, there is no way you can. But if you are buying them on the internet, go with the 14 oz. Preferably Everlast, which is what I use. Except I use 16 oz, though I am 5%26#039;10 and 148 pounds.|||it goes like this.

After that, get yourself some handwraps , and some bag gloves, so your hands are protected. You%26#039;d be suprised how much of a beating your hands and joints will take, so protect yourself, it%26#039;s very important.

Shadow boxing is something that a boxer will do almost every day. It will get you in good cardiovascular shape, and really get you used to throwing punches correctly and accurately.

A speed bag, medicine ball, and jump rope are some other things that you%26#039;ll eventually need if you get serious about this.

As far as workouts, there are plenty of things you can do, but one important thing you must know is that boxing has alot to do with the legs and your core. So you%26#039;ll want make sure you do alot of leg workouts (squats), and alot of core (lower back, oblique, %26amp; abs).

I also think that if you are 6ft and 120lbs, then you need to put on some weight. Don%26#039;t worry, atleast you aren%26#039;t overweight!

The greatest thing I%26#039;ve found with boxing training, is that I see my results almost every day. I surprise myself everyday with what I can do, how long I can go, and how much I can take.

Where do the judges sit in Olympic amateur boxing?

I understand the 5 buttons, 3 within a second stuff - but where are they actually positioned?

If I%26#039;m watching a pro fight I%26#039;ve got into the habit of keeping my own scorecard and am almost always within a point or at the most 2 of the judges. The Olympic amateur scoring system doesn%26#039;t seem to reward good boxing - combinations landed quickly can%26#039;t count. |||The Judges sit around the side of the ring. Amateur Boxing and Pro Boxing are basically two different sports, especially with the button system. Is boxing a good idea to take up as a workout?

What happens if you kill someone during a boxing match?

Im doing an essay on boxing and i need to know what happens if you kill someone during a match.|||In some cases the fighter deads, but in the hospital, just after the fight.

If the fighter is killed, that demonstrate that the corner doctor, coach and referee were blind and never noticed about the bad situation of the poor fighter receiving a contundent punishment.

IN other cases, the fighter has some previous problem that can cause an immediate death, just like in other sports, like soccer.

The rules of boxing are made in order to try to avoid accidents, but remember that if you are allowed to punch someone in the face, for example, you should know that a very straight punch in the face can kill you or provocate critical hurts, is part of the risk that you must understand prior to go up in the ring.|||There%26#039;s a legal principle %26quot;assumption of risk%26quot; That means that you agree to go into boxing match, you know that you can get hurt, or worse, As long as the person who throws the fatal punch is not negligent.|||Assuming that he was killed by a legal punch, no law has been broken and thus there is no penalty. If the killer pulled out a knife and stabbed the other fighter to death then that%26#039;s another story.|||nothing because both participant clearly understood the risk involved.

It goes by how fast you pick it up.|||yea your at a good age. you should find a coach and he should get you your boxing license for matches. i am a boxer and i just found a gym and trained there. if you know the basics you should be fine|||u should go to any local boxing gyms or local park districts and see if they have boxing. have a many amateur fights until u feel ready to turn pro if u want. good luck|||Your age doesn%26#039;t matter as long as you%26#039;re extremely dedicated. Me, I need to train now, at 14, because I%26#039;m natural, and I don%26#039;t take protein shake **** and all that, but at your age, if you%26#039;re out of shape, GNC products could help you out. Get Acai berry juice from the internet, it increases stamina, helps recover, and has lots of antioxidants. I heard its pretty good because I read the label of what%26#039;s inside, this one heavyweight boxer uses it so he can maintain his bigass size and train every single day, and T.O. uses it.

If a trainer isn%26#039;t a complete ******, he will train you for free because he sees something in you. The trainers that charge money are the ones who scam fat people who want to get in shape. Boxing question - has any of the famous boxers helped their opponents up after knocking them down?

I was watching the Diaz-Pacquiao fight last night and noticed that Pacquiao seems to be concerned after knocking Diaz down and tried to help him up. Im not a big boxing fan so I havent watch that many fights and find it quite odd. wanted to check if its norm and if any other famous boxers did it in their fights.|||I%26#039;ve seen it a few times, but only after the fight was over. The boxer isn%26#039;t allowed near a fallen opponent while the referee gives the count. It%26#039;s a rare thing to see, with all the ego.|||It%26#039;s not wise to pull a knocked out boxer up as he could have injuries or not fully gained consciousness. You%26#039;re supposed to allow the boxer to come round and have the medics check him over.

Pretty much every fight I%26#039;ve seen, whether an opponent has been knocked out or not and the fight has ended, at some point the two competitors congratulate and acknowledge one another. The only fight that I%26#039;ve seen recently where that didn%26#039;t happen was the Calzaghe vs Hopkins fight, but hey Hopkins is a sore loser.

That%26#039;s what I like about boxing, two opponents can try and knock ten bells out of one another but at the end of it all they acknowledge and congratulate one another which is true sportsmanship. What little fights I%26#039;ve seen in the UFC this seems to be missing, which is a shame.|||It%26#039;s not a good idea on many levels, unless you so dominate a guy you want to crush him with your mind as well. Or maybe you think you might have killed him by mistake.

You need to understand how much energy is used in boxing and it%26#039;s really a fight against gravity. Every time you go down you have to fight gravity to get back up. The more energy you spend, the less you have and the better chance I have to win the bout. It%26#039;s excluded from sportsmanship, it%26#039;s part of the dance.|||The boxer is not allowed to help the fallen opponent maybe because while the referee is counting, he will check and make sure if the boxer is OK. It could distract the referee if the other boxer will interfere by helping the other to stand up. But anyway, any boxer who did like that showed that they are really a sportsman which is good.|||I saw mad Mike Tyson do it during his second career, and I%26#039;ve seen Roy Jones even trying to get the ref to stop a fight.

What Manny attempted was not wise in any situation so most boxers don%26#039;t try to do it..................there are doctors and trainers to do that, plus the ref%26#039;s there too.|||After knocking out Luis %26quot;the Wild Bull%26quot; Firpo in 1923 (after two rounds of mutual mayhem), Jack Dempsey graciously helped lift Firpo to his corner. Sportsmanship was pretty impressive then.|||Can%26#039;t remember who got plastered, but Jack Dempsey helped up a guy. I%26#039;ve seen it other times, but generally the ring doctor wants to keep the hurt fighter down until things are ok.

I think maybe Alexis Arguello did the same.|||I saw Floyd Patterson helping Ingemar Johansson to his feet after knocking him out. When did the wearing of singlets (vests) and headguards become compulsary in Golden Gloves Boxing?

I%26#039;m resarching a project on the history of boxing and was wondering when (and why) the wearing of vests and headguards became necessary in the Golden Gloves tournament. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.|||Daisy is an idoit... how would a singlet stop the spread or hiv?|||Probably when HIV became a problem.|||They were not both at the same time. The vest or tank top became mandatory everywhere some time around 1978 or 1979, although earlier than that in some locations. I believe California was the last to adopt it. The theory is that it prevents the exchange of sweat and blood. This was long before anyone knew anything about HIV, but there were general health concerns. At least part of the goal was to set amateur boxing apart from the professional game.

I can%26#039;t find a precise date on headgear, but it is later and would be some time in the 1980%26#039;s. Here, the theory is that it prevents cuts and swelling, and to some degree protects against shock to the brain, but it does not protect against concussions, as these occur when the head is rocked sharply and the brain knocks against the inside of the skull. There is still a lot of debate on this issue.

Mine would be when buster douglas beat mike tyson he was 42-1 underdog|||Mike Tyson%26#039;s ear biting of Evander Hollyfield. It was gross in there.|||Being British i am going to name a few major upsets from fighters from these shores.

Randolph Turpin Vs Sugar Ray Robinson

Lloyd Honeygan Vs Donald Curry

John H Stracy Vs Jose Napoles

And very nearly

Henry Cooper Vs Muhammed Ali

I would have to say as most others have though the one that always stands out is Douglas Vs Tyson|||I think the biggest upset in boxing would be the tyson-douglas fight, I remember watching the fight with my parents, we were sure that tyson was going to win in less than 90 seconds (actually we were all betting to see how early tyson would knock him, that tyson was going to win was not even debatable) and then when the fight started it all went wrong, for the first time since i had started watching boxing tyson was not the aggressor but the victim, I remember staring at the screen waiting for that knock out punch from tyson......but it never came at the end douglas won and I swear you could slice the shock with a knife, the entire plaza was quiet as douglas became the new heavy weight champion, for me it was like a movie gone wrong, a cruel twist ending that left me shattered (like many eighties kids i was a tyson fan growing up) the closest i ever came to such a shock was when ultimate warrior beat my hero hulk hogan at wrestlemania (hey....i was just a kid at the time i thought it was real!!) I remember looking at my mom half expecting someone to come into the ring and say %26quot;candid camera!%26quot; or something.....even the news broadcasters were shocked hours later as they reported the results of the fight, i think the entire world was shocked while the few people who were crazy enough to actually bet a lot of money on douglas became rich.......it took like a day for the reality of the fight%26#039;s results to register on everyone%26#039;s mind....I know for a fact that some people haven%26#039;t gotten over it yet (even today) It took me a while before I could start watching boxing again....I think we were all so used to Mike beating everybody up and winning that we never entertained the possibility that someday he might actually loose.....that has to be the most shocking moment in boxing for me.|||2 words...ear biting|||I%26#039;m shocked when ever I see Floyd %26quot;Crybaby%26quot; Mayweather break down and cry a like a little girl after each match. I%26#039;m talking face contorting bawling not just a few tears of joy.|||Chavez -Taylor 1|||This lady boxer named Ann Wolf that hits like a man....I bet she can beat a top ten welterweight with a punch like this........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h-hmcnlm...|||I have to agree with you. Tyson had been knocking nearly everybody out and seemed almost invincible. Douglas a big underdog at 42-1 comes along dedicating this fight to his late Mother and gives Mike the whipping of his life. That was a shocker because not too many people expeced Douglas to last more than a few rounds with Mike. It was no fluke either as Douglas was well trained and carried out a true fight plan against Tyson beating him to the punch time after time during the fight and actually outfighting and outboxing him.

When John Stracey beat Jose Napoles for the welterweight title was also a shocker though not as great as Douglas and Tyson.

When Muhammad Ali beat George Foreman for the title, many thought he would get beat was a great shocker to many!

When Michael Spinks defeated Larry Holmes for the title would also be considered a shocker.

When Leon Spinks defeated Muhammad Ali to win the title was also a great upset.

When George Foreman knocked out Michael Moorer to win the title at his age and after such a long period of time is one of the most shocking and amazing boxing feats in history as well.

Thumbs up to ACEMAN for a great answer!|||haha I saw this guy trying to do karate

Then Little Mac destroying Mike Tyson without getting hit once in 90|||Seeing Roy Jones get KOd the first time literally silenced a whole sportsbar!|||I have 2.

1. When Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson, that was a real shocker. Although Tyson apparently said he really almost didn%26#039;t train for that fight, perception on Tyson is that he%26#039;s just invincible.

2. Luis Resto beating undefeated Billy Collins. Then after the fight, Collins%26#039; trainer and father discovered that Resto%26#039;s gloves%26#039; paddings were removed. Therefore beating Collins with bare hands. Collins never made it back to boxing again because of that severe beating. Collins died 8 or 9 months later in an accident, many said partly due to depression. Resto and his trainer was jailed and banned in boxing for life.|||Yeah, Tyson, with the ear.|||1st. for me would be Tyson - Douglas, %26#039;%26#039;Buster%26#039;%26#039; hammered %26#039;%26#039;Iron Bite%26#039;%26#039; all night and landed that vicious uppercut that ended it. Plus Tyson%26#039;s corner had no idea what they were doing and had what looked like a condom full of water as an icepack! That fight was the most shocking and I think everyone would agree the biggest upset in boxing history.

2nd for me Is Tyson - Holyfield 1. %26#039;%26#039;The Real Deal%26#039;%26#039; bullied and pounded the 11 - 1 favored Tyson until he knocked him out clean.

3rd. Not only because of the KO, or the fact that Mike was unbeatable at the time -- but more the way Buster did it. Why isnt Boxing so popular nowadays like it used to be? Will it ever rise to the top again?

It makes me mad how people in the boxing industry only care about money. I dont even think they realize their messing up the sport. Hopefully in a couple of years it will be back on top with great boxers and they need start showing boxing on regular tv instead of PPV to make it more popular. What do u think?|||because no one wants to go toe to toe anymore

you have boxers that talk a lot of sh#t but dont do anything

promoters can be blame too because sometimes they dont want to see their boxers lose so they set them up with opponents that anyone can predict they%26#039;ll beat

|||boxing isnt dead the promoters are just retarted they promote fights once a year while ufc promotes 500 a day and there are too many boxing orghanizations like wbo wib hbo nad stuff while theer is only like 3 popular mma organizations such as ufc, elite xc, pride. Huge boxing fan, but right now, this is how I see it.

Looking back at the Antonio Margarito vs Miguel Cotto fight is this a boxing classic?

Alot on the line in this fight, Mexico vs Puerto Rico rivalry and also the two styles that made a great action fight, and the changing of the fight abruptly from a boxing lesson my cotto to a lesson of will by Margarito, and the changing in the guard in the welterweight division that goes to a fighter who has waited his whole career for a win as prestigous as this one. The national rivalry is simply icing on the cake.

Off hand I can compare it to the bout between Chavez-Taylor where crisp punching is scoring far too highly and judges and ringside commentators are giving the fight to the clear loser.

In both bouts the busier fighter is leading on the cards while in actuality losing to the fighter doing more visible/undeniable damage. It speaks to the true essence of the sport of boxing. The inharmonious balance which must be kept in the ring between defense and offense.

Without question, this will be looked on as a classic fight.|||If you don%26#039;t consider that fight as vintage or classic, you are plain retarded or a poor blind sissy girl.

How can an amateur ensure professional boxing technique?

I enjoy boxing-in a very broad sense. I like to watch fights, I like to read about the history. I love the sport and I vaule the practicality of the self defense. I%26#039;m even finding some fun in trading leather with my friends in the backyard.

But my concern is this; my friends and I aren%26#039;t going to a real boxing gym, we%26#039;re just messing around at our leisure-but we all value boxing skills, and are trying hard to maintain real form and technique.

The sparring matches are improving us as fighters, but maybe not as boxers. I worry we could be practicing bad habits without having a pro trainer there to correct us.

I would like to try kick boxing as a form of exercise and self defence?

Do you think it would damage my back further to do kick boxing? If this isn%26#039;t appropriate for me, are there any other martial arts I could do?|||There is always the possibility of injury in martial art training. That being said, most traditional martial arts (done correctly) can be very therapeutic on the body. If you are looking for a low-impact martial art that will get you into good physical shape and teach you to protect yourself, you may want to look into Tai Chi or traditional Karate. I practice Tang Soo Do Karate, and most of our training is fairly low-impact. I would suggest looking into a few different schools in your area and take a few practice sessions to get a feel if the instructor, school, and training is right for you.

Good luck!|||Medical fact: discs don%26#039;t %26quot;slip.%26quot; They don%26#039;t move at all. The whole term %26quot;slipped disc%26quot; is a misnomer.

That being said, you probably have a bulging disc or some other type of back injury. I have a chronic back condition myself.

Sadly, it CAN limit you in the martial arts. However, you can still enjoy them, and kickboxing might be okay if you are careful.

So try it and see, but ice the injured area of your back every night for 20 minutes (this REALLY helps. If the disc doesn%26#039;t swell up, it won%26#039;t hurt.) and be careful to warm up before you stretch. At least 20 minutes of cardio before any stretching. Cold stretching puts a huge amout of strain on your joints.

And with the kicks, start off slow. If anyone asks about it, explain that you are testing your back to see how much it can take before you jump in at full power. They will understand. Every week, take it up 10% or 20%. If your back holds strong to 100%, you%26#039;re doing great. This way you will slowly build up the core strength that kicking requires.

Good luck!|||I did kickboxing for 2 and a half years and it got me really fit and flexible and even now i still know how to defend myself if i have to.Its a great form of exercise is say go for it.However if you have a bad back i would ask the instructor if its ok for you to do certain techniques before you try them because some kicks are demanding on your back because you have to put your waist into the kick and that might damage your back.|||im not sure how your back would affect kickboxing

Does anyone have a unique boxing workout?

I am looking to workout via hitting a heavy bag, but does anyone have a special workout they use while hitting the heavy bag? For example, like one round of boxing, one round of running, etc? Thanks for any suggestions!|||Well I read a book where martial arts specialist Mr. Gracie, fills a trash can full of rice, then forces his hands into the rice and tries to open and close his hands as they are submerged into the grains of rice, this will help with hand strength. The question was a unique boxing workout, not a typical workout. Everybody does warmups shadowboxing etc. Props to the guy named Martial Arts, as he seemed to master the lost art of %26quot;COPY AND PASTE%26quot;|||You can do what%26#039;s called drilling the heavy bag. you use straight punches or uppercuts while doing it. You start at head level on the bag punching straight out, while bending at the knees you work the bag (still punching straight out) and work the lower part of the bag then come back up to head level. Do that for three minutes and rest for one you%26#039;ll be completely gassed after a couple of rounds.

Ricky Hatton has an exercise he calls the Bag Bar. There is a heavy bag adjacent to a 6 foot long piece of steel welded to two steel tripods at waist height. He jumps over the bar side to side like a gymnast does on a pommel horse for 1 minute, then after the minute is up he goes to the heavy bag and drills it for 1 minute then back to the bar jumping over it for one minute. He does this routine for 4 - 3 minute rounds. I%26#039;ve never tried it, but it sounds exhausting.|||1-Stretch all your body 15 to 20 min

5-15 min speed bag no stopping

6-12 to 15 min jumping rope

7-shadow box and move around the ring to relax.

I%26#039;ve been doing this for the past 7 years and it has worked for me. From time to time i jump rope first and then after shadow boxing and then everything else.|||One of the worlds oldest, and most celebrated sports, boxing, has proven to be popular among many people, for a variety of reasons. From its emergence in ancient Greece, through early 18 century England where it was considered the %26quot;gentle%26quot; art of self defense (albeit a bare-knuckle form of defense), and an introduction of the Marquess of Queensbury rules (1866; scoring system that required gloves), boxing has continually been refined and perfected.

Many of boxing%26#039;s training philosophies have originated out of tradition, rather than science. Trainers often refuse to change, continuing to teach archaic techniques.

Unfortunately, the failure to accept change is just one of the problems. Many boxing trainers are unable to implement new techniques due to insufficient funding.

Boxing is a sport that thrives in the ghetto with many gyms being located in city community centers that lack funding for expensive training devices. These gyms cannot afford Olympic barbell sets or other proprietary tools.

Trainers are forced to work around their economic situation by continuing to promote outdated techniques, while others implement unconventional (inexpensive) training solutions.

Consider The Use Of Bodyweight Calisthenics:

I grew up boxing at a city community center where equipment was limited to a ring and several punching bags. There were no elaborate machines or weight sets and we succeeded with little or no equipment. Bodyweight exercise was convenient and effective.

The use of calisthenics continues today in boxing gyms across the country which helps boxers improve strength and endurance through bodyweight movements.

Common Exercises Include:

* Pushups

* Pull-ups

* Burpees

* Sprint drills

* Rope skipping

* And More...

Many strength and conditioning %26quot;gurus%26quot; will argue that bodyweight exercise is ineffective. Unfortunately, they are left speechless when asked to explain how so many of today%26#039;s world champions have thrived with nothing more than bodyweight exercises. Please note that I am not against the use of weight training, I am simply illustrating a point.

Bodyweight Exercises For Size %26amp; Strength!

I get a ton of emails every week regarding bodyweight exercises. People want to know what are the best bodyweight drills for size and strength.

Professional boxing is unlike any other sport. How many other %26quot;professional%26quot; athletes work full-time jobs to support their passion? Have you ever seen an NFL player work a full day of physical labor before heading to a 2-hour practice?

Although oblivious to many boxing fans, most professional fighters do not earn enough money to make a living. Consider the professional who trains 6-weeks for a $ 5000 payday. After training expenses and manager/trainer fees, the fighter is left with little.

The economics of boxing is partially responsible for the sport%26#039;s inability to keep pace with the mainstream sports of today. Fortunately, there are many ways to improve strength, power, speed, and endurance without elaborate training equipment.

Survival of the fittest requires that one adapt to their surroundings. If your training facility lacks equipment, you must improvise and adjust. This article will examine one low-tech solution to complex training.

First, let%26#039;s review the concept of complex training. Complex training involves the integration of resistance exercise followed by an explosive movement.

Two Common Examples Of Complex Circuits Include:

* Weighted Squats followed by non-weighted squat jumps

* Bench Press followed by medicine ball chest pass (see below)

Windows Media - 97kb

Real Player - 97kb

The resistance work activates the nervous system (Ex. barbell squats), followed by an explosive movement (squat jumps) to target the fast twitch muscle fibers. The goal of complex training is the improvement of explosive strength and speed-strength.

Dr. Yuri Verkhoshansky, renowned Russian scientist, defines speed-strength as the %26quot;ability to quickly execute an unloaded movement or a movement against a relatively small external resistance. Speed-strength is assessed by the speed of movement.%26quot; (1)

An old saying in boxing is that %26quot;speed kills%26quot;. Anyone who has stepped inside the ring can attest to these words.

Unfortunately, many trainers fail to recognize the difference between maximal strength and speed-strength. The recent trend in combat athletics is a relentless quest for maximal strength where coaches overemphasize the need for maximal strength when the real need is speed-strength and rate of force development.

Sport biomechanist Vladimir Zatsiorsky notes that %26quot;the ability to produce maximal force and the ability to achieve great velocity in the same motion are different motor abilities.%26quot; (2)

A boxer who throws a straight right hand does not have time for significant force production. Rate of force development (RFD) is much more important. As stated by Zatsiorsky, %26quot;If the time available for force development is short, RFD is more important than maximal strength.%26quot; (2) Verkhoshansky also noted that excessive maximum strength training can impair speed-strength. (1)

Fortunately, we can use low-tech complex training drills to enhance speed and explosive abilities. The equipment requirements are minimal.

Isometric Punch Followed By Med Ball Punch

These drills will use isometrics to form the resistance portion of the complex training equation. We will train each limb independently (ex. right side, then left side). The integration of an isometric hold followed by a dynamic movement is known as the static-dynamic method of developing muscular strength. The athlete begins with a brief isometric hold, followed by a dynamic movement which is explosive in nature. This style of training has been proven to be more effective at producing speed-strength than dynamic exercise alone. (1)

The boxer will begin by holding an %26quot;isometric punch%26quot;. A right hand boxer will assume his conventional boxing stance and then apply pressure with the right hand against an immobile structure such as a wall. You can wear a training glove to protect the hand, or place a small pillow against the wall. Two positions will be held, the beginning of the punch motion (Figure 1) and the mid-range portion of the punch (Figure 2). Maintain each position for 3-5 seconds with approximately 80% of maximum effort.

It is important to limit the time of the isometric hold to approximately 5 seconds or less. Extended isometric holds have been shown to %26quot;decrease coordination and speed of movement and worsen elasticity of the muscles.%26quot; (1) These potential drawbacks can be avoided by limiting the length of the contraction.

View Full Video Here.

After completing the isometric holds, you will continue with a simulated medicine ball punch. I recommend using a very light medicine ball for this portion of the drill. The emphasis must be speed. In the video clip demonstration below, I am using a 5-pound ball. The medicine ball must be small enough to fit in one hand. The goal of this movement is to mimic the exact motion of punching. If the ball is too large, this will not be possible.

We commonly use 3 and 5 pound medicine balls. More is not better when training speed-strength.

It is imperative that you throw the ball with maximum effort. After throwing the ball, you will catch it from the rebounding surface and continue for 6-8 reps. Be sure to simulate the act of punching as closely as possible.

As you can see in the video demo, I have thrown the medicine ball against a large punching bag. I have improvised and used the heavy bag as a rebounding surface. You could also use a cement wall if one is available.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of this medicine ball drill is the avoidance of deceleration. One of the drawbacks of conventional weight training is the need to decelerate at the end of the movement. Consider the bench press.

After lifting the bar from your chest, you must decelerate to avoid launching the barbell into the air. Deceleration is a not a functional component of punching.

You do not decelerate when throwing a punch towards your opponent. Your goal is to punch through your opponent. Medicine ball release drills can simulate the muscle actions required for punch acceleration.

Another advantage of this drill is the development of your non-dominant side. Many athletes possess considerable strength and coordination differences between dominant and non-dominant sides. The smaller medicine ball introduces a unilateral component that is not realized during two-hand drills.

For example, as a right-handed athlete, it will feel natural to perform a right hand medicine ball punch (simulating a right cross) while it may feel awkward when training the non-dominant side (ex. left hand). When training the non-dominant side, you will need to reverse your footing. For example, a right-handed athlete will assume the southpaw stance. Your right foot will be in front when you throw the left hand medicine ball punch. You will simulate the arm action of a left cross. As a right-handed fighter, you will rarely throw the left cross. This is no reason to skip this portion of the drill because our goal is symmetrical development. Work both sides evenly and your coordination will improve with regular practice.

Sample Routine

A sample routine is listed below:

Right Hand

(left foot is in front)

1. Right hand isometric punch (start position) x 3-5 seconds

2. Right hand isometric punch (mid-range position) x 3-5 seconds

3. Right hand medicine ball punch x 6

Left Hand

(right foot is in front)

1. Left hand isometric punch (start position) x 3-5 seconds

2. Left hand isometric punch (mid-range position) x 3-5 seconds

3. Left hand medicine ball punch x 6

Repeat for 3-5 sets.

Routine Notes:

o There is no rest between the isometric hold(s) and the medicine ball throws. Rest 1-2 minutes after training both sides, and then continue with another set.

o These workouts are not designed to enhance endurance. Perform these drills when the body is fresh.

o These drills are convenient, yet highly effective. You can purchase a 5-pound medicine ball for less than $15.

o The isometric punch exercise can also be utilized to strengthen the hook and uppercut. Simply stand in between a doorway and tense the beginning and mid ranges of each punch.

o Perform these drills 2 to 3 days per week.

In the 21st century, professional boxing attracts major sponsorship deals and makes fighters millionaires. Amateur boxing is also growing exponentially, with those looking for a challenge attracted by the allure of the benefits to be realized. Indeed, boxing is increasing in popularity almost daily, with movies like Billion Dollar Babies and massive pay-per-view events attracting millions of watchers.

Boxing has become a global phenomenon with tremendous cross-over appeal - the fitness industry has latched on to the boxing popularity with box-out classes and the like. Why has boxing become immensely popular and how does one become proficient at its practice? The following article will shed some light.

Why Box?

Boxing provides many benefits and challenges. For example, it has the potential to turn lives around by providing focus and an outlet for pent up aggression. Boxing%26#039;s greatest benefit might be in the training and preparation needed to reach the fighting level. Indeed, the actual fighting aspect need not be emphasized to realize boxing%26#039;s many benefits, which include:

1: The Ultimate Workout

The typical boxing training session stimulates all muscle groups, and provides the perfect combination of aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (short-burst, without oxygen) exercise. Indeed, the boxers%26#039; workout is guaranteed to get anyone into the best shape of their lives.

To perfect the basic boxing skills while developing the stamina to survive three, three-minute rounds of sparing (actual fighting in a controlled gym-setting to prepare for the real thing), one needs to be supremely conditioned and strong enough to throw powerful punches from round one through to three.

The boxing workout improves every type of physical capacity: strength, power, coordination, aerobic fitness, anaerobic fitness and endurance. Exercises that are emphasized include, heavy bag, speed-ball spring-ball and medicine-ball work, skipping, running, weight-training (calisthenics mainly), and wind-sprints.

Exercises are shortened and combined to form a circuit or performed independently over a longer period. In short, boxing improves ones reflexes, endurance, flexibility, coordination, speed, power and cardiovascular fitness.

A sample boxing workout (about one-hour).

o Warm-up: 5 minutes on exercise bike followed by stretching of all major muscle groups.

o Sit-ups with medicine ball: three sets of 25.

o Skipping five sets of two-minutes.

o Five two-minute rounds on heavy bag.

o Three two-minute rounds on the speed-ball.

o Side laterals: three sets of 15.

o Bike: five minutes to cool down.

Note: All exercises have a one-minute rest between rounds as per the period given between rounds in an actual boxing match.

2: Confidence

Possessing the skills to look after oneself gives a significant amount of confidence. Contrary to popular belief, boxers typically do not seek confrontation as their skills, and confidence, convey an inward belief that there is nothing to prove - and if one has nothing to prove they will be less compelled to prove it.

However, if the boxer needs to protect themselves in a self-defense situation, they will be more adept at finishing things quickly and cleanly, due to heightened confidence levels and skill.

When one is confident of their ability to defend themselves physically, this often translates to a psychological benefit of self-contentment and peace of mind.

3: Stress Relief

Boxing is the ultimate sport for countering stress, in my view. The combination of strength training and aerobic work provides the best of both worlds in terms of feeling a muscular pump and stimulating the cardiovascular system - both of which enhance psychological well-being.

After a hard day, hitting the heavy bag for five to six rounds serves as a tremendous stress release. Boxing (particularly concentrating on the focus mitts) enhances the ability to relax, which helps one to keep calm and poised under pressure. In this sense, boxing might help one to manage their life more efficiently.

4: Providing The Ultimate Contest Between Two People

Boxing allows for a direct competitive experience between to people in a controlled setting. Depending on ones disposition, this can be a great self-esteem boost.

Full contact sparring, which is optional in many boxing classes, provides the perfect platform to refine fundamental boxing skills, and a great test of physical capability and courage.

Equipment Needed

Before engaging in any form of boxing training, the right equipment must be available for both safety and performance reasons.

* Gloves (bag and sparring): bag gloves are smaller and designed for speed of movement to enhance the refinement of skills. Sparring gloves are larger with greater degree of padding to protect ones opponent from serious damage.

* Wraps: absolutely essential for hand support and protection. Wraps hold the bones of the hand together while lessening excessive impact to the hand and wrist.

* Mouth guard: required for sparring to prevent damage to the teeth, cuts to the mouth and to protect the jaw. Clamping down on a mouth-guard will immobilize the jaw to prevent damage stemming from impact.

* Speed-ball: an inflated ball hanging from a back-board. The speed ball acts as a rhythm bag, to develop hand/eye coordination - the same sort of coordination used in a blocking punch (when glove is used to push away ones opponents punch). Hit the ball with side of hand or knuckles.

* Heavy bag: the heavy bag is the most used piece of boxing training equipment as it allows one to develop all of the main boxing punches, while enhancing punching power. Practice combinations, and single punches on the heavy bag.

Intensifying The Heavy Bag.

The heavy bag is one of the oldest, most recognizable pieces of training equipment. Unfortunately, due to its commonality, the bag is often overlooked...

* Double-end bag: an inflated ball situated between two ropes or cords (one attached to the ceiling, one to the floor) and used to develop hand/eye coordination and balance. This bag also provides a moving target, which enhances timing (the ability to pick punches and land combinations at exactly the right moment).

* Skipping rope: jumping rope (at various speeds and using different techniques) will improve footwork, enhance stamina and build shoulder strength, making it a fundamental boxing requirement. Bounce lightly on the balls of the feet and vary the foot spacing and angles.

* Medicine ball: an inflated ball which varies in weight. Used to perform a multitude of movements. The main benefit to using the medicine ball is its versatility, as it can be used anywhere at anytime and entire work-outs can be designed around it. The medicine ball causes one to train in an unstable environment, which improves balance and coordination.

* Focus mitts: a trainer uses focus mitts (placed on their hands) for the trainee to hit. These are very important for skill development, balance and timing. The trainer will call for a punch, or a combination of punches, while the trainee focuses on perfecting their technique.

How To Box

Stance %26amp; Footwork

Stance in boxing is vitally important as it sets the platform for all basic punches.

The main stance in boxing is the common orthodox stance, which is used when sparring or engaging in bag work. To get into this stance do the following:

o Stand with the feet hip width apart.

o Take a single, regular, striding step forward with the left foot.

o Back foot kept at a 45-degree angle.

o Shift weight onto the balls of the feet.

o Distribute weight equally between the feet.

o Keep the knees bent.

o Bend elbows and tuck them into the sides (to protect the vital organs). As arms are brought into sides, place fists at cheekbone level, with left hand slightly out, poised to jab.

o Keep chin down and look up.

o Roll shoulders forward slightly.

o Position body partially sideways with left shoulder and hand slightly closer opponent.

Note: those who naturally lead (jab) with their right hand are called southpaw fighters. To change to southpaw place right foot forward and turn body slightly to the left.

Footwork is equally essential as punches directed at ones opponent will not land if one cannot efficiently get close enough. Similarly, evading the opponents punches will be all the harder if footwork is lacking.

The key with footwork is to ensure the body is centered and balanced at all times and that fighting stance is maintained. With footwork, the focus should be on moving backward and forward, lateral movement (moving left and right) and pivoting.

Moving Backward %26amp; Forward

When moving forward, push off the back foot and step forward with front foot half a step. Follow front foot with back foot in a shuffling motion to arrive back at the fighting stance.

Windows Media Player Format (29 KB)

MPEG Format (356 KB)

Move backward only when absolutely necessary and try to fire punches while retiring. To move backward, push off with the ball of the front foot, while stepping back with back foot one half step. Follow with front foot, back to fighting stance.

Lateral movement

Lateral movement involves moving/pushing either left or right to evade ones opponent. To move left, push off from the ball of right foot while left foot moves one half step to the left.

Windows Media Player Format (38 KB)

MPEG Format (535 KB)

Follow with the right foot to achieve correct fighting stance. To move right, push off from the ball of left foot while moving right foot one half step to the right. Follow with left foot.

Pivoting

Pivoting enables one to quickly change the angle of approach to effectively counterpunch their opponent. Begin by shifting weight to the ball of the front foot; then push off with the back foot to pivot the front foot a quarter turn to the left or right. This should throw opponent off balance and open them up to attack.

Basic punches

Before even contemplating sparing, four basic punches need to be mastered: the left jab, right cross, left hook and left uppercut. These punches are designed for the orthodox stance fighter.

The southpaw will simply perform these punches with the opposite hands, leading with the right jab. These punches are the bread and butter of boxing and, once mastered, can be put into combinations and used in a sparing context. Remember, in order to successfully learn the following punches, stance and footwork need to be perfect.

Left Jab

The most used punch in boxing is the left jab, making it the most important to master. The jab is used primarily to keep ones opponent a distance; to set them up for one of the power shots: for example, the right-cross.

Windows Media Player Format (43.6 KB)

MPEG Format (597 KB)

Although the jab is not considered a power punch, it can cause a considerable deal of damage over the course of a fight.

To Perform The Jab

+ Stand in boxing stance holding fists in a palms in ready position.

+ Throw punch in a direct line straight from the chin.

+ Once hand leaves the guard position (from chin), rotate fist half and inch.

+ Keep fist relaxed throughout this movement, until just before the point of contact when it is fully clenched.

+ Immediately relax fist and bring back to guard position.

Right (or straight) Cross

The right cross is often referred to as the most enjoyable punch to throw as it is thrown with the right hand - a natural movement for most. A large degree of power can be transferred through the right cross - it is most often responsible for many of the knockouts seen in a boxing match.

Windows Media Player Format (48.5 KB)

MPEG Format (673 KB)

The right cross should be utilized behind the jab, as a knockout punch, rather than being used too often, which can lead to overbalancing (one puts themselves slightly off balance when the right is thrown) and exposure to a counterpunch.

To Perform This Punch

+ Stand in fighting stance and throw right hand directly from the chin guard position.

+ While throwing cross, turn torso into punch and pivot on right foot (ensure the whole of the upper body is thrown into punch to generate power).

+ As right heel pivots outward, accelerate punch toward opponent.

+ Again, relax hand throughout movement, until the point of contact, when hand should be clenched tight.

Left Hook

The left hook is typically the hardest punch to master as it is thrown at an unnatural angle, and requires a great deal more motor coordination.

The hook works best when one is fighting on the inside (very close to their opponent).

Windows Media Player Format (43.2 KB)

MPEG Format (556 KB)

It is devastating punch which twists the opponent%26#039;s brain inside their skull and often results in a knockout - Heavyweights David Tua and Mike Tyson are masters of this punch.

To Perform It Correctly

+ From orthodox stance, transfer weight to the left side.

+ From guard position, left elbow is bought up so it is almost parallel with the floor (arm should form a hook shape at this stage).

+ At this time, the fist is rotated and a punch is thrown.

+ When a punch is thrown, pivot left foot, left leg and torso sharply to the right to generate the force.

Left Uppercut

Uppercuts are also used when fighting on the inside. The key with the uppercut is to throw it in a fixed position, from fighting stance. The uppercut can be delivered to the body or head.

Windows Media Player Format (45.2 KB)

MPEG Format (604 KB)

+ From guard position, dip left so elbow rests near the left hip.

+ Rotate fist palm upwards.

+ Launch punch with the left side of body.

Note: When delivering any of these punches always remember to breathe correctly. Exhale with a short wheeze upon delivering each punch. Between punches, breathe normally in a controlled fashion. Also, when punches are thrown, snap back to fighting stance rather than leaving the punches hanging and always keep non-punching hand up to protect head from a counterpunch.

Basic combinations

Putting punches into combinations will help the trainee to master them more effectively. A good boxing offense includes a multitude of punches fired at quick succession rather than one or two thrown sporadically - when it comes to punching, more is usually better.

Some basic combinations include:

o One-two-three (jab, right cross and left hook):

This combination flows really well if the weight is transferred to each foot at the appropriate time. The jab is used to soften up the opponent, the right cross does the damage and the left hook finishes things off.

Windows Media Player Format (42.3 KB)

MPEG Format (530 KB)

o Jab, right cross, jab:

The combination is one of the most basic in that the two key boxing punches are used. The idea is to maximize speed, which will increase power output. Turn torso into each punch and transfer weight onto ball of each foot depending on the punch thrown.

Windows Media Player Format (42.1 KB)

MPEG Format (473 KB)

o Uppercut, right cross, left hook:

With this combination, the uppercut is delivered to the body, with the right cross and left hook to the head. This combination allows one to wind up for the right cross following the deliverance of the left hook.

Sparing

Once all required boxing skills are developed, and stamina is increased to a high level, sparring is advised for skill refinement and excellence in execution.

However, sparring is largely optional and should not be enforced - the training required to get to the sparing level is a boxing benefit in itself. With sparring, headgear, sparring gloves, mouth guard and groin protector are mandatory.

Initial sparring should begin slowly with both fighters practicing a few basic punches, before the more advanced, no-holds-barred stuff. Remember to keep the guard up, try to relax and above all don%26#039;t get angry, but remain composed.

Punches will flow better and recovery will occur faster if the fighter remains as relaxed as possible.

Conclusion

As mentioned, boxing has become a very popular pastime and serious sport for many, and not surprisingly provides the best workout and challenges to many of our senses and capacities.

Becoming adept at boxing will enhance confidence, self-esteem, and all levels of fitness. Try it, you won%26#039;t be disappointed.

Success in any fitness program is an elusive moving target. There are many exercise devotees out there who continuously take aim. However, few consistently achieve a solid hit, when it comes to their fitness goals. Success demands focus, balance, consistency and discipline. It also requires the ability and dedication to continuously overcome obstacles.

Endurance athletes such as runners, cyclists, kayakers and others engaged in outdoor exercise regimens recognize winter as one of these obstacles. Icy roads, snow covered trails, freezing temperatures and reduced hours of sunshine all make regular outdoor workouts dicey.

However, for many of these athletes, tapering off simply is not in their creed. They have worked too hard to watch their fitness levels slip away. They need an alternative that is both time efficient and effective in improving their fitness levels. It must also be challenging, motivating, provide variety and be convenient. In other words, it must meet the following criteria:

* Intensity - It must challenge both the aerobic and anaerobic systems.

* Strength gain - It must improve overall body strength.

* Injury free - It must provide intensity without battering muscles and joints.

* Calorie burn - It must help burn off any extra fat to help increase/maintain leanness.

* Variety - It must be challenging and non-boring.

* Mental toughness - It must help the athlete or fitness devotee learn to cope with difficult challenges in their primary activity. (1)

Fitness Boxing is a whole body workout that meets the above criteria and more.

It takes the best aspects of workouts used by some of the world’s most finely conditioned athletes, boxers. It combines them into a fitness program that is safe for the mainstream exercise devotee. In other words, with Fitness Boxing, you train like a boxer in everything but full contact sparring. (That aspect of boxing is left to professional boxing coaches in the relative safety of a standard boxing ring.)

Fitness Boxing is definitely challenging. It works most of the human body’s physiological systems. The musculoskeletal system becomes stronger through specialized resistance exercises and boxing specific equipment drills. The cardiorespiratory and vascular systems become more efficient through workouts that are more than 60% anaerobic. The central nervous system is trained to respond faster and more efficiently to punching combination drills. (2)

Intensity is the trademark of a Fitness Boxing workout. As indicated above, it is more than 60% anaerobic. Many of the drills are made up of two or three minute rounds, with one minute recovery periods. You push through your current lactate threshold and improve it during the round, or anaerobic interval, by working at 85-90% of your maximum heart rate. (3) During the one minute rest period, you learn to more efficiently recover your oxygen debt while simultaneously stretching and reviewing proper technique.

Strength gain is a natural byproduct of the Fitness Boxing workout. Boxers work with weights, specialized boxing equipment and plyometric devices in a manner that maximizes calorie burn to increase lean muscle mass. The Fitness Boxing workout focuses on improving speed, strength, explosiveness and lactate threshold management while simultaneously keeping body fat at minimal levels. (4)

Remaining injury free while improving total body fitness is one of the major benefits of a Fitness Boxing program. As a cross training alternative, it provides a break in routine and adds variety to your overall training program. It distributes the load of training across various body parts. (5) For endurance athletes who do a lot of running, this means a break from pounding your knee and ankle joints, while still getting an intense training session.

Mental toughness comes from learning to cope with the demands of a challenging workout. The more you work through a series of rounds that push you into your anaerobic zone, the better you will deal with intense endurance training or other demanding exercise routines.

So, Fitness Boxing offers all these great cross training benefits. What does a typical workout look like?

Most formal classes at boxing gyms or health clubs are 60 minutes in length. A typical session is broken down into several carefully designed components to ensure a total body workout.

* Warm-up - A complete head to toe warm-up. Its purpose is to safely prepare your muscles and tendons for the rest of the session. Approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

* Conditioning - This is typically a transition from the warm-up into some boxing specific strength and conditioning exercises. These are resistance exercises that emphasize muscular strength and endurance, speed, tone and anaerobic conditioning. Typically without weights. Approximately 10 minutes.

* Technique - One to two new techniques are introduced in each session. The objective is to build from the basics, such as fundamental punches, to more complex combinations and defensive maneuvers. Approximately 5 minutes.

* Hitting Drills - These are the heart of the workout. Timed rounds are employed in a circuit training format that works everything from focus mitts to target shields to heavy bags and more. This is highly anaerobic, involving two or three minute rounds (work intervals) interspersed with one minute active recovery periods. After a series of these rounds, you will be refreshingly exhausted, de-stressed and invigorated. Approximately 35 minutes.

* Cool Down - This gets your heart rate down while you stretch out and improve your flexibility. It can also serve as a Q%26amp;A and planning session with your instructor. Approximately 5 minutes.

In addition to formal classes, complementary strength, plyometric and medicine ball training are commonly utilized to improve overall conditioning as part of a Fitness Boxing program. Strength training employs resistance exercises involving weights that improve overall strength with a particular focus on speed strength, or the ability to activate fast-twitch muscle fibers for explosive punching power. Plyometric and medicine ball training consist of a series of exercises designed to enhance starting speed, acceleration and power. (6)

Ok, it sounds like a great cross training alternative. How do I get started?

If you want a great Fitness Boxing workout, but have no desire to become a competitive boxer, you might want to stay clear of the more hardcore boxing clubs. If this is the case, check out a local health club or look for an upscale boxing gym that caters more to the workout than to the competition. Many health clubs now have some sort of boxing program geared more toward the fitness aspects of the workout. (7)

Personal trainers with prior boxing training experience can also offer comprehensive Fitness Boxing workouts. Just make sure the trainer you select is certified by a nationally recognized certification organization and has the appropriate experience and personality to meet your needs.
